Medical Brigades & Free Elective Surgery for the Uninsured
Dr. Jodie Roure, JD, PhD, of the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies, organized a humanitarian medical relief brigade to Puerto Rico in October 2017 to assist local doctors and nurses in an ongoing effort to provide medical aid to residents injured by Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Irma. A panel of doctors and nurses volunteered in the initial hurricane relief effort, which was hosted by President Karol Mason of the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, in November 2017. The ongoing medical efforts continue to grow under the Hurricane Maria Assistance and Relief Institutional Alliance, Inc. (Hurricane MARIA, Inc.), which was formerly known as Doctors for Maria Relief.
